The 2012 Free Minds Film Festival will be held in Colorado Springs from the evening of Friday, Sept 28th to the afternoon of Sunday, Sept 30th. As you can see, the line-up of movies and speakers looks excellent. Registration is free.

I’m pleased to announce that I’ll be speaking on “Equality: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly” on Sunday afternoon, after the documentary Free or Equal. The movie will be shown from noon to 1 pm, and I’ll speak from 1:00 to 1:45 pm.

Here’s the abstract for my talk:

Equality is a slippery concept. It can mean equal outcomes, equal capacities, equal opportunities, equal treatment, equal worth, or equal rights. Which of these kinds of equality is compatible with a free society? Most people on the right reject the ideal of “equality of outcomes” but support “equality of opportunity.” However, we’ll see that hidden dangers lurk in that ideal of “equality of opportunity,” and those dangers threaten the foundations of a free society.

I hope to see you there!

(Soon — hopefully in October — I’ll publish this lecture and all the others that I’ve done over the past year and something online.)

The best discussion I ever read about equality was Roderick T. Long’s article “Equality: The Unknown Ideal”. I highly recommend it.
